DETAILED SYNOPSIS:
In the spirit of This is Spinal Tap, Death of a Dynasty offers a funny and satirical look behind the closed doors of Damon Dashâs and Jay-Zâs hip-hop empire. Shot in New York City, the film centers around Dave Katz (Moss-Bachrach), a journalist at a hip-hop magazine who is sent on assignment to uncover the often comedic underworld of Roc-a-Fella Records run by Damon Dash (producer of The Woodsman) and Jay-Z (Fade to Black). Dave believes he is a member of the Roc-a-Fella team and privy to the daily ãgoings onä at one of the worldâs hottest record companies. Although he is actually ãtwo timingä the magazine (feeding sordid gossip items about the feuding partners to local gossip columns), the journalist thinks he is a real ãplayaä only to later find out that he is the one being played.
Celebrity cameos in the film include: Chlo‘ Sevigny, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Loraine Bracco, Carson Daly, Walt Frazier, Flavor Flav, Peter Sarsgaard, Rashida Jones, Master P, Duncan Sheik, Noreaga, Marc Ronson, Samantha Ronson, Ann Jones, Denise Rich, Ed Lover, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z and RUN-D.M.C. among many others.
Ironically, in the RUN-D.M.C. cameo, Jam Master Jay and Run nostalgically discuss the ãold schoolä of rap, when the violence and conflict within todayâs hip-hop world were non-existent. Portrayed as elderly rappers from the old school, they ad-lib about how, when they were starting out, rap groups were unified. They discuss the lack of friction among different personalities in the hip-hop world, alluding to situations like the East Coast / West Coast rivalry that existed between artists like Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls (a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G.). The conversation eerily foreshadows the type of aggression that led to Jam Master Jayâs murder in October 2002.
